Spiti Valley Homestay Trek
High on the Trans-Himalayan plateau, Spiti feels less like a side-valley of Himachal and more like a self-contained world of stone, sky, and timeless prayer. Here stand some of the oldest living Buddhist centres in India: Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 CE and often called the “Ajanta of the Himalaya”; Key (or Ki) Monastery, a 4 166 m cliff-top citadel established in the 11ᵗʰ century; and Dhankar, a former fortress-gompa balanced 300 m above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers.

Our Spiti Homestay Trek threads these cultural landmarks with a string of high-altitude villages—Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Demul, Lhalung—and lets you sleep in family homes rather than tents. Daily walks of three to four hours link terraced barley fields, fossil-rich mud hills, and grazing grounds where blue sheep pick their way across scree. Evenings are for thukpa by the bukhāri stove and unfiltered views of the Milky Way in a sky so clear you can trace satellites with the naked eye.

The route climbs gradually from Kaza (3680 m) to a maximum of ~4500 m, so the real test is altitude, not terrain. Travel light, carry only a day-pack, and know that every rupee you spend stays in the valley—supporting households who have kept Spiti’s monastic culture alive for over a millennium.
Once you’re well acllimatised, the difficulty level of the trek is somewhat easy. That makes this trek suitable for beginners and veterans alike. This ‘family friendly’ trek will be a treat for those seeking a cultural experience combined with scenic hikes through dramatic mountain terrain. Whether it’s walking past century old monasteries, spotting Himalayan wildlife or engaging with locals, the Spiti Homestay Trek is an unforgettable blend of adventure and tradition.
